You are probably here because you have space that is so small you don’t know how you could possibly fit anything in, or you’re looking for design solutions. Do not lose out hope, there are plenty of ideas to transform your problem area into something practical and stunning.
1. Less is more with small spaces
You want to avoid over-crowding a small space with lots of different designs. Too many different decorative pieces with various colours can overwhelm the room. Less is always more when it comes to smaller sized rooms, and you don’t have to decorate every single wall.
2. Opt for big pieces of artwork
According to interior designer Kelly Collins, you want to avoid gallery walls. Gallery walls include a collection of pictures that are grouped on the wall. These are stunning for larger room spaces but will simply overwhelm a small space.
Instead, opt for ‘larger pieces of artwork and position them higher on the walls, as this will draw attention upward’. A lot of wooden designs, can really add space to a room as they are neutral in colour and can also add a great contrast to a light-coloured wall.
3. Use Lighter and more netural colours
Choosing more neutral and light colours schemes can create an illusion of a bigger room. William Durrant who owns Herringbone Kitchens stresses ‘light, neutral colours on the walls will maintain an airy feeling in the room’. He goes on to say how ‘deeper and darker shades will have the opposite effect as they don’t reflect light’. Neutral colours include, white, beige, wood or rustic themes.
4. Maximise storage possibilities
There are plenty of storage solutions either in-built into a wall, or designed in a way that will minimise the risk of sticking out too far. However, simply factoring in plenty of storage will assist in keeping your small space free from clutter. According to Sallie King, founder of Urbanize, ‘clear surfaces and floors make a home feel bigger’. There are plenty of clever hidden storage solutions, or wall hung furniture that can be utilised to create more space in a small space.
I can hear you say, “I’m aware of this already, but it can be hard to find storage that fits awkward or small spaces!”. However, this can be solved by getting in touch with a company specialising in CAD design services. You don’t have to spend hours searching for storage solutions, when someone can create a bespoke design for you instead. Therefore, you save time and energy as you know it will fit exactly what you need. It can also work out to be a cheaper option too.
5. Decorate with non-bulky items
Items that stick out include lamps, and furniture made with thicker wood. It would be effective to decorate your room with items that are flush to the wall, or furniture that is made with slimmer wood. It is also important to respect the boundaries of the room, and as Justine Hand from Remodelista states, ‘always leave a little air in between the sides of your furniture and walls’.
For example, this flush tree wall lamp would save a lot of floor space compared to your standard floor lamp.
You could also decorate an archway, door or ceiling with wooden trims (that you could later paint to your colour-scheme) or moulding to create more presence and lift the eye. This can be especially helpful if you have low ceilings, ‘That’s really the name of the game, and that is bringing the eye up as much as possible’ Laurel from Laurel Bern Interiors states.
